Martial Arts for Children
When you are considering putting your child into martial arts classes, you are giving them a a gift they can receive from few other places. The martial arts focuses primarily on enhancing their self-esteem by giving them the self-confidence that comes along with being able o defend themselves, the physical well-being of getting their body fit, and the ability to achieve their goals by competition and belt promotion. At Sioux Falls Martial Arts Academy, the shy child will be encouraged to become more assertive, the aggressive child more in control. We will perform drills that promote consideration of others, yet personal motivation. No one is asked to do what they cannot. Praise is liberal and criticism is always constructive.
What are the Martial Arts?
We teach the practical techniques of TaeKwonDo, Hapkido, and JuJitsu. Some of the techniques may appear to be violent, but self-defense is not playtime when your child is being attacked. First, however, we promote peaceful resolutions to conflict to prevent injury to either party. We teach stylized moves for proper execution of blocks and attacks when fighting multiple opponents. Board breaking is part of training that not only rewards proper technique and power, but will give your child a feeling of achievement unlike any they have ever experienced. We also place importance on the ability to spar, performed in full gear for protection. No other aspect of self-defense is as important as the ability to distance yourself from an opponent and deliver attacks that enable your child to escape from a dangerous situation.
How does martial arts training develop self-discipline?
Self-discipline comes from the tremendous results you will see from your child's training. From that point, it's much easier to acquire the will-power needed to overcome personal obstacles. Martial arts itself is "self-discipline". Training day after day, week after week, and year after year establishes a physically disciplined pattern. Once your child discovers how they accomplished this physical discipline, their mind can more easily adapt this quality to their daily life as well. Children begin to understand that there are rules to learn on the road to adulthood. There are rules inside a martial arts class, and corresponding rules at home. Breaking these rules, as the child learns, leads to a reprimand; abiding by them leads to praise and affirmation.
What do I consider when choosing a martial arts school?
Choosing a school...BEWARE!!! Not all martial arts schools are alike!
It's unfortunate that for many parents, the only difference between schools is price and conveinance of location. However, here is some information on what to look for:
- Good instructors should earn the living they deserve. Cost is not everything.
- While all instructors MUST be black belts, not all black belts are good instructors.
- When comparing costs, always ask about testing fees, and gear costs. These are usually hidden when discussing the price of tuition.
- Watch a class and try one out. No martial arts style is for everyone.
- Compare the class options. Maybe your child wants to participate in something else also, or your schedule changes.
